SCUNTHORPE 19 – York 20

On a cloudy but mild autumnal day at Heslam Park in great conditions for playing rugby, Scunthorpe hosted York in a top of the table game. York kicked off towards the Queensway end. The game from the outset was always going to be a tight game with both teams conceding the least points to date in the league. The game ebbed and flowed with Scunthorpe in the ascendency for the 1st 10 minutes but with York making the Scunthorpe team tackle in the next 10 in their own half in the 2nd 10 mins. The 1st score came for York, when Scunthorpe having won a line out on their own 10 metre line, carrying the ball only for a pass to be missed and the York winger picking it up to score under the posts. The try was converted 22 mins Scunthorpe 0 York 7.
Scunthorpe now under constant pressure from York, being held in their own 22. A good exit by Scunthorpe saw York with a line out which they won, York then carried the ball just past the Scunthorpe 10 metre line but an infringement by Scunthorpe saw York with a penalty kick at goal. This was successful. 33 mins Scunthorpe 0 York 10.
From the kick off Scunthorpe failed to kick the ball the requisite 10 metres and York opted for scrum. The York scrum now dominating in the tight drove the scrum and Scunthorpe were penalised. York again opted for a kick at goal which again was successful. 36 mins. Scunthorpe 0 York 13.
From the kick off Scunthorpe managed to win a turnover ball and from the ensuing penalty kicked down the line for a line out near the York 22 metre. With the line out won and as previously in the game the Scunthorpe pack drove the York team back towards their own line only for York to be penalised for collapsing the driving maul and a penalty try was awarded with the York number 20 being sent to the bin as
the miscreant for the offence. 39 mins Scunthorpe 7 York 13. One more play saw the end of the half.
Scunthorpe 7 York 13. HT.
Scunthorpe kicked the 2nd half off towards the Queensway end. York won the ball and kicked it back for Ethan Taylor to clear from his own 22 to touch on the halfway line. York threw the ball in only for Nick Dyson to take the line out against the throw. Numerous phases were then played through the forwards culminating with the Laurence Pearce carrying the ball into the York half and a basketball off load to Will Robinson who still had plenty to do to make the line and score Scunthorpes 2nd try of the afternoon. The conversion was missed but Scunthorpe were back in the game. 43 mins Scunthorpe 12 York 13.
From a knock in the line out York won the scrum and after numerous carries Scunthorpe were penalised for not releasing in the tackle, the York scrum half who was lively all game took a quick tap before being stopped, York recycled the ball and fed to the tight head prop who carried the ball and with Scunthorpe falling off tackles ran from the 22 to score under the posts. Try converted 48 mins Scunthorpe 12 York 20.
The play again got back into the rhythm of both teams carrying and turning over the ball with Scunthorpe now in the ascendancy. From a line out on the York 5 metre line York win the ball but swiftly turn it over to Scunthorpe. With the backs carrying Ethan Heath-Drury saw a gap only to be taken down with a high tackle by York. With the referee playing advantage, James Dyson quickly picked the recycled ball up and scored a try. Converted by Ethan Taylor. 56 mins. Scunthorpe 19 York 20.
The game continued in a similar vein as the 1st half, York kicked the ball which was then charged down by Scunthorpe only for the ball fortuitously falling back into a York player hands who then ran some 30 metres only to be cut down by a terrific tackle by Lewis Talbot, Ethan Taylor executed a perfect steal at the ruck for Will Harrison to make a tremendous 50-22 kick. From the line out York then started attacking the Scunthorpe dominant line out by sacking the player with the ball. In one phase of play a Scunthorpe player took exception to some off the ball incident but the referee only saw the retaliation and subsequently the player received a yellow card. York proceeded to dominate in the scrum with Scunthorpe one man down. Giving up numerous penalties at scrum time. Once more Scunthorpe tackled resolutely and gained a penalty near the half way line after a brilliant jackal by Cam Christie. Scunthorpe opted for a kick at goal but this went wide of the posts. The game continued with no further score. A bad day at the office for Scunthorpe with York taking the spoils although Scunthorpe takes a conciliatory losing bonus point. Stay at the top of the league with an 8 point lead.
Player of the match for his resolute defence and ball carrying in attack. Grant Elliot.

WOMENS TEAM

SCUNTHORPE 27 – 33 BURTON (3RD ROUND OF THE PAPA JOHNS CUP)

Scunthorpe Women welcomed Burton Women to Heslam park for the 3rd round of the papa johns cup , having never met before it would be an interesting encounter. Burton struggling for numbers requested uncontested scrums for the game and adhering to the RFU game on principles we matched their numbers too. We had to re-adjust our game as our scrum is normally a massive attacking platform for us 👍🏻

From the kick off we showed great intent with the ball and looked after it in contact , and recycled well for the next attack . When we pressured Burton they made errors and we used the ball well to our strengths . The tries went end to end and no sooner had we got ahead they pulled it back. Our flying back three always on the prowl for tries and continue to reward the team with points when they get good distribution from the rest of the squad really embedding the whole team ethic!

As always the women showed great character and determination but it wasn’t meant to be on the day Burton eventual winners 33-27 . Good luck to them in the rest of the competition! As always we will be ready and resilient and will continue to represent the club with pride and passion in the remainder of the league season 💚🖤💚🖤

HULL IONIANS 24 – SCUNTHORPE 31

Scunthorpe 3rds made the short trip over the bridge to Hull Ionians and after a short pause on the A15 to help Rob White out of a sticky situation the team made it to the ground.

In true 3rd team style we started by absorbing a small amount of pressure from the opposition before turning the screw ourselves. The forward pack started to work the pods well and made holes through the defence making our way down field earning a penalty in front of the post. Tom Fell stepping up and putting Scunthorpe into an early 3 point lead. Hull kicked off and Scunthorpe continued to apply pressure with great handling from the backs and great rucking and mauling from the forwards, Scunthorpe worked their way down the field to the 22 and fantastic handling from the forwards and backs saw Neil Wainer storm over the line for Scunthorpe’s first try, conversion successful. Hull kicked off again and Scunthorpe forwards decided to take the game by the scruff of neck and rucked and mauled the ball down into Hull’s half, and with the support of the forwards Scunthorpe’s cannonball Reid Clutterbuck forced his way over the line for scunthorpes second try with a successful conversion putting Scunthorpe 17-0 up.

In true 3rd team fashion we entered our period of nonchalance allowing hull to break through the line and after a number of mistakes and missed tackles Hull went over the line with a half time score of 17-7 to Scunthorpe.

Second half kicked off and The Greens continued with their own self sabotage, giving silly penalties and dropping off tackles allowed Ionians to score two quick converted tries giving them a 21-17 lead heading into the last 20 minutes.

A few quiet words under the posts from the players woke Scunthorpe up to get their heads back on and do what works well, the forwards regrouped in their pods, breaking holes in the defensive line allowed Harry Fell to break through a gap, from what the crowd said, was a 50 meter sprint to the line, conversion successful. 24-21.

Forwards and backs continued to dig deep, rucking and supporting runners, Scunthorpe on the Hull 22, Rick Robbo cuts back inside spotting a hole in the defence, Callum Hinch supporting keeping the ball going forward and offloading to Neil Wainer to go under the posts for his second try, conversion successful, 10 minutes to go Scunthorpe 31 -21 Hull.

Ionians switched on again and began to find holes in the Scunthorpe defence, working their way down to the Scunthorpe 5 meter line, big tackles from Scunthorpe appeared to have held Hull at bay but after a well worked wide phase Hull managed to go over in the corner, conversion missed. 2 minutes to go, 31-26 to Scunthorpe.

The final couple of minutes brought about some of the strangest decisions on a rugby pitch anyone has ever seen, Scunthorpe applied the pressure to try and win the ball back giving Hull a penalty inside their 22 which they elected to kick for touch. After impossible acrobatics by Rob White managing to keep the ball in Devon James scooped the ball up to a chorus of ‘Kick it out’. Nope, not the maverick that is Devon James, a kick straight back down Hull’s throats drew a what the….from the crowd. The forwards stuck their head where they shouldn’t have had to and won the ball back that allowed Ash Grey to try and kick to touch but directed it straight into a Scunthorpe player but it still allowed the referee to blow for full time. 31-26 to Scunthorpe final score.

MANSFIELD 7 V 41 SCUNTHORPE

Greens travelled to Mansfield today for our third NLD cup game, with pouring rain all morning everyone was covered in mud before the game even started (thoughts to whoever’s washing shirts this week!)

It took us a few plays to warm up but we soon started to dominate the game with some great work from the forwards giving the backs lots of great ball to play from. Eventually we gained the upper hand after an early try from the opposition sparked the lads to get to work with some strong passing play and drive to score try after try, another great performance!

Some highlights of the game for me were Phil scoring a great try right under the posts after a weaving run, giving Charlie the perfect conversion spot. Harry E getting sent off for some choice words to another player 🙃 and my own tap and go penalty try at the end causing them to concede the match early.

We go again! 🟢⚫
