2nd TEAM

SCUNTHORPE 27 – WHARFEDALE 15

After a week off The Stags returned to league action facing Wharfedale for the first and last time this season due to earlier cancellations.
Wharfedale travelled to Scunthorpe with a bare squad however knowing Wharfedale the lads who travelled would be well up for the fight. The Stags started the game slow allowing Wharfedale to run in a try out wide after some fast hands released their fullback to score. Conversion missed. 0-7
The Stags responded with some good possession and a pick and go through an unguarded ruck saw prop Jack Rowbotham fend off the Wharfedale 10 to score The Stags first of the match, converted by Charlie Turner. 7-7
A break away from Wharfedale 9 saw fly half Henry Dawson see yellow for a cynical trip. Wharfedale took advantage and came back with an identical try scoring out wide with pacey backs and again missing conversion. 7-10.
Stags took 3 points just before the half drew to a close levelling the score to 10-10 for half time.
After a good kick chase to restart The Stags were awarded a penalty, opting for sticks Henry Dawson converted. 13-10 to the stags however the lead didn’t last long as wharfedale built momentum to smash through the stags defence and dot down. 13-15 conversion missed.
The Wharfedale small squad soon worked to The Stags advantage as Wharfedale began to tire upfront a good carry from Keir Gosling gave number 8 Mo Ratnage an easy pick and go from 5 metres out to score The Stags first of the second half, conversion good 20-15.
The Stags weren’t done there as an ol reliable driving maul saw hooker Harkeran Sandhu score in the corner conversion good again by Dawson. A good result against a resilient Wharfedale 15, 27-15 great game.
MOTM was awarded to Dylan Gosling for a solid performance from the row.
Oppositions MOTM Henry Dawson for a good day with the boot.

DEVELOPMENT TEAM

GOOLE 59 – SCUNTHORPE 17

Scunthorpe Development travelled over to Goole to play their second team, Goole warmed up with what seemed to be near 2 teams worth of players which left the 16 from Scunthorpe looking on with envy.

A quick reshuffle saw the ever green Jon Brewster and Colin Redhead take up the half back partnership, with a great attempt at bringing the average age over 30.

As the game kicked off Scunthorpe found themselves in the ascendancy, however, a knock on allowed the talented Goole centre to wreak havoc with offloads a plenty, Goole scored a few more, before Scunthorpe struck.

A lineout to the corner, lobbed in by Charley Wilkinson, taken by Cam and a maul, the backs set up a fancy move but it was not needed as Scunthorpe rumbled over the line for Scott Kelly to score.

At this point we realised we didn’t have a kicking tee but up Rhys Hampshire stepped and…… least said the better for the kick.

Goole scored a couple more before half time

Enter the youth policy as D.o.R Tony Wilkinson entered the fray to make a 9, 10, 12 combo which equalled 140 years old… A bit more aggression in the second half but Scunthorpe couldn’t turn possession into points till Captain Fantastic Cam Christer and Scunthorpes man of the match took a quick tap and with a fleet of foot danced over the train line.

The score was 50 something to 12 but The Devs did not take too much from it they enjoyed their day out.

For Tony and Col it gave them chance to play rugby with several of the lads who have come up through mini junior section and through Colts.

Wonder how they’ll feel in the morning… a bit rough….
