2nd TEAM (Stags)

HULL IONIANS 20 – SCUNTHORPE STAGS 27

This weekend the Stags travelled across the bridge to local rivals Hull Ionians who had lost to The Stags at home earlier in the season.

The Stags were dominant in territory in the first 15 not letting Ionians out their own half for some time however repeated penalty offences at the breakdown meant the Ionians could keep the ball. Once The Stags had some possession they soon put their effort into prizes as Alf Taylor crashed over the line for the first score of the game. Unconverted.

The hard effort was soon undone as Hull built numbers thick and fast and scores under the sticks converting taking the score to 7-5.

Ionians then deepened the blow with a penalty kick good. 10-5,

However only minutes after Henry Dawson returned the favour with a penalty conversion 10-8 to the hosts.

In the closing stages of the first half it was all but over however a turnover ball on the last play saw Ionians cross over the line again in the far corner. Conversion good 17-8 Stags down at half time.

The second half needed a big defensive effort from the stags with a reduced or eliminated penalty count. This was executed along with Elliot Saltmarsh dotting down after a break from Jack Murr. 17-15 conversion Dawson.

Saltmarsh then scored again after some great work from The Stags forwards 17-20 advantage Stags.

The lack of discipline showed by Scunthorpe crept back in with tired bodies as Hull was gifted another 3 points for a high shot in the stags half. 20-20.

A draw wasn’t something The Stags had travelled over the bridge for, with a precise kick from Goodison into the Ionians 22, the pack nailed the line out when it mattered most and drove the maul from the edge of the Ionians 22 over the white wash with returning Kane Linklater taking the spoils, this was to be the last play of the game, Dawson conversion good.

Tough day at the office but a massive away win for The Stags. 27-20 victors. Next week against Sandal discipline must be far better however great win.

WOMEN’S TEAM

SCUNTHORPE 53 – AMBER VALLEY – 0

Scunthorpe Women travelled to Amber Valley for a rearranged league game.

The opposition were struggling for numbers from the start so we matched them to let the game go ahead 👍🏻

The conditions were horrific and played a part in some handling errors leading to lots of scrums. When the greenies had the ball , their go forward was impressive and there were some well worked tries across the team 👌🏻 We had to work hard and maintain focus to allow the game to flow and try and work on some strategies that would play a part for the rest of the season . As always the players showed great RFU TREDS throughout and Scunthorpe always maintained a positive attitude .

Well done those players out of position and those that assisted the opposition to allow the game to proceed 🫶🏻
